Why Format Matters
Recruiters spend 6 seconds scanning your resume. ATS systems spend 0.3 seconds parsing it. The right format ensures both can read your content.
The Ideal Structure
Header (5 seconds)
- Full name
- Email and phone
- LinkedIn and GitHub links
- No photo, no address
Summary (2 lines)
- Your biggest achievement
- Years of experience + domain
- Key technical skills
Experience (reverse chronological)
Each role should have 3-5 bullet points:
- Action verb + what you built/did + scale/impact + technology
Good example:
"Built real-time notification system using WebSockets and Redis, serving 500K daily active users with 99.9% uptime"
Bad example:
"Responsible for backend development and notifications"
Education
- Degree, university, graduation year
- GPA only if above 3.5
- Relevant coursework only if entry-level
Skills
- Group by category: Languages, Frameworks, Tools, Databases
- List specific technologies, not generic terms
- Match the job description keywords
Formatting Rules
- Single column. No tables, no sidebars, no columns.
- Standard fonts. Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica. 10-12pt.
- Consistent spacing. Same margin, same bullet style.
- PDF format. Preserves layout across devices.
- No graphics. Icons, charts, and images break ATS parsing.
Common Mistakes

| Using tables | ATS reads left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Columns break the flow. |
| Adding headers/footers | Most parsers ignore them completely. |
| Using .pages or .jpg | ATS can't read these formats. |
| Listing responsibilities | "Led team" says nothing. "Led 5 engineers to deliver X" says everything. |
