The FAANG Resume Checklist
Use this checklist to audit your resume before applying to FAANG and top tech companies. Each item is based on what recruiters actually scan for in the first 6 seconds.
Format & Structure
-
Clean, single-column layout. No complex tables, sidebars, or graphics. ATS reads top-to-bottom, left-to-right. Columns break the reading order. Use a single column with clear section breaks.
-
Standard section headers. "Experience", "Education", "Skills". ATS systems look for these exact headers. Creative names like "My Journey" or "What I've Built" don't get parsed correctly.
-
1-2 pages max. One page for under 10 years experience, two for senior roles. FAANG recruiters spend 6 seconds on the first scan — they won't read a 4-page resume. If you're senior, every bullet needs to earn its place.
-
PDF or DOCX format. The most ATS-compatible formats. Never send .pages, .jpg, or .txt. PDF preserves layout across devices. DOCX is safest for older ATS systems.
-
Standard fonts. Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica. 10-12pt size. Fancy fonts break ATS parsing. Keep it simple.
Content & Keywords
-
Mirror the job description. Use their exact keywords and phrases. If the JD says "Spring Boot," write "Spring Boot" — not "Java framework" or "backend framework." Exact matches score highest with ATS.
-
Technical skills section. List all relevant tools, languages, and frameworks. Group by category: Languages, Frameworks, Databases, Cloud, Tools. This helps ATS categorize your skills correctly.
-
[object Object], Numbers, percentages, and dollar amounts. Every bullet should have at least one metric. "Built payment system handling **$2M+** monthly transactions" beats "Built payment system."
-
Strong action verbs. "Built", "Led", "Reduced", "Increased". Avoid passive voice: "Was responsible for" hides your impact. Active voice shows it.
Impact & Results
-
Problem, Action, Result. Every bullet follows this structure. What was the problem? What did you do? What was the measurable result? This forces specificity.
-
Relevant experience first. Put your best, most relevant work at the top. FAANG recruiters scan the first 2-3 bullets of your most recent role. Make them count.
Detailed Breakdown: What Each Item Means
1. Single-Column Layout
Why it matters: ATS software reads text in reading order. Two-column layouts confuse the parser. Text from the right column might get read in the middle of the left column, creating nonsensical output.
Example of what fails:
Left Column Right Column Experience Skills Software Engineer Java, Python at Google Spring Boot
ATS reads: "Experience Skills Software Engineer Java, Python at Google Spring Boot"
What works:
Experience Software Engineer at Google Skills Java, Python, Spring Boot
2. Standard Section Headers
Headers ATS recognizes:
- Experience / Work Experience / Professional Experience
- Education / Academic Background
- Skills / Technical Skills / Technologies
- Projects / Side Projects
- Summary / Professional Summary / Objective
Headers ATS doesn't recognize:
- "Where I've Made an Impact"
- "My Toolbox"
- "Career Journey"
- "What I Bring to the Table"
3. Keyword Mirroring
The rule: If the JD says it, your resume should say it — exactly.
JD: "Experience with React, TypeScript, and GraphQL"
Wrong: "Frontend development with modern JavaScript frameworks and API technologies"
Right: "Built user interfaces using React and TypeScript, consuming data via GraphQL APIs"
The second version uses the exact keywords ATS scans for.
4. Quantified Achievements
The formula: Number + context + impact
Weak: "Improved application performance"
[object Object], "Optimized database queries reducing API response time from 800ms to 120ms, improving user satisfaction score by **35%**"
Where to find numbers:
- Response time improvements (ms, seconds)
- User counts (daily, monthly, total)
- Revenue impact ($)
- Cost savings ($)
- Error reduction (%)
- Throughput (requests/sec, transactions/day)
- Team size (led X engineers)
5. Action Verbs That Work
| Weak Verbs (Avoid) | Strong Verbs (Use) |
|---|---|
| Worked on | Built, Designed, Implemented |
| Was responsible for | Led, Owned, Drove |
| Helped with | Launched, Shipped, Delivered |
| Participated in | Architected, Optimized, Reduced |
| Assisted | Mentored, Guided, Established |
6. Problem-Action-Result Structure
[object Object], "Payment failures were causing **23%** of customer support tickets"
Action: "Redesigned payment retry logic using exponential backoff and circuit breaker patterns"
[object Object], "Reduced payment failures by **23%**, saving **$50K** annually in support costs"
[object Object], "Redesigned payment retry logic using exponential backoff and circuit breaker patterns, reducing payment failures by **23%** and saving **$50K** annually in support costs"
Quick Self-Audit
Score yourself honestly on each item. If you're missing more than 2-3, your resume needs work before you apply.
